The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul:he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Psalms 23:1-3.
Some people think that the idea of the Lord is my shepherd is ancient and does not fit current realities. The picture of a shepherd they know are bearded haggard looking old men that move around with a crooked staff and flowing gowns. The idea of the pastures are grasses in the meadows and mountains. The idea of being a sheep sounds offensive and debasing of their status; of all animals, a sheep! They wonder how these typologies fit into a contemporary twenty first century upwardly mobile generation.
The truth is that this generation needs a saviour and a shepherd much more than any other generation. With all the developments and technological transformations, the need for a shepherd is much more overwhelming.
“And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.”Revelation 1:12-15.
This is the vision of John the beloved of the Lord who is my shepherd. He is the ancient of days and modern of times; the first and last, alpha and omega. Wen people talk about pastors and preachers and ministers of the gospel, they forget that these are servants of the lord my shepherd. He is the head of the church, which is his body and he administers the church. The pastures are no green grasses but the word of God. He leads us by his word, his voice is the greatest asset of every sheep of his pasture. He appoints Pastors who preach, teach and live by his word.
My Lord has not changed, from the cassock, rod and mitre to a suit, it takes more than a dress to change the nature of the lord my shepherd. That great God is my shepherd, I am a sheep of him who is Alpha and Omega.
“Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.”Isaiah 40:10-11.
Prayer: My father, it’s amazing to know that you’re my Lord, Savior, God and Shepherd. From your greatness you come down to gather, carry me and lead me by your word. My thanks know no bounds in Jesus name
